May 15

Our goal was that we were to practice our presentation of our side of the project and get feed back. We also had to get some more of the sides done too.

What happened at STEM was that we first had to get our power point done so we could practice. We were all working to find what we need. We also worked during midday on it. Next we all went to  practice. I was a little bit nervous even though it was practice. We ran though it and got feedback one what we should do to improve. We ran though it again and got feedback at the end of the day.

Our goal for tomorrow is to present the project for the Nature Trail and do well.

First Day of Project

David and Kiera at work
Goal for the day: Finish developing Project Plan, find information we need, and find ways to identify the species.

The Start of our Project was developing a project plan. I am in the fauna group with David, Kiera, and Kassie. We are looking for what animals live behind the Dayton Regional STEM School More specifically the stream, pond, and around the trail area. We started to talk about what we were going to do for the project. We are going to collect capture animals to see what live there. Next, we started to come up with the information that we need to collect when we collect the animals. Weather, place, and number of them are some of the information we decided we need to collect.  Our teacher gave us some books to help us identify the species. I found Ohio.gov Department of Natural Resources as a resource to use to help identify our animals.
Start of the Lab Notebook

We Completed More than what we first planning. We went on to determine our sampling methods. We found a lot of ways to capture animals. For example, we found a box trap that we could make out of wood. We went through all the materials we need and I made graphs for writing down what we found. We are all ready for tomorrow to set the traps and look though ones that have already been set by the teacher to find macro invertebrates. The traps will be set around the area and also in the stream. We will also be analyzing the macro invertebrates that we find.

Some resources we have
Goals for tomorrow: Look though the traps in the river and build and set other traps.

Mound Laser

The Purpose of This Trip
We went to Mound Laser to help plant a bioswale for them. This trip was also to start off our Nature Trail Project.

What I did
At Mound Laser I jointed a group to help plant plants and also put mulch around the area. We first went down to pick a spot were we could start planting the plants. The plants were already in there spots but they were still in pots. We took turns holding the plants and diging the hole. We all helped fill the clay/dirt in with fertileizer. After we planted all the plants we then went go get mulch and put it down. We helped each other spread it and took turns getting the mulch. We did this till all the areas were done.

Guiding Principles
  • Environmental Impact-The bioswale we made would impact the environment health I think and it gives helps more plants to grow in that area. I would give is a good score because is don't affect is too much on the environment. It affects it pretty positively.
  • Citizenship- We helped plant the plants to help the environment. This shows that we care about the environment. We also helped out other people other than ourselves. I would give this a good grade.
  • Craftsmanship-We planted the plants and put the mulch over to make it look nice. We all worked together to put it together nicely. This would get a high grade because of the work and how it looked after.
Reflection
I will remember that this is a good way to help the environment and make it look pleasing too. This helped me better understand the nature trail by what we are trying to do and how we can make it look nice. The bioswale is one idea to help the environment

Job Shadowing

My job shadowing assignment was at Wright State Educational Resource Center. I went their with two other people . We went first to room 116 in Allyn Hall, a Wright State building, at 8:30 am to meet with Shephaine Bange the director.

Her Job is a librarian. She works close with the Dunbar Library. She says no two days are ever the same for her. One day she could be doing finger printing or checking in books. To get this job a person has to get a master in library sciences and have expertise in human services of other areas like it.  There are also  different kinds of librarians like school librarians. People who want this job has to be comfortable with themselves and also knowledgeable with their skill set.

I learned that there are many different jobs in the library like in tech services. There are people who run have to help maintain the websites and also people who help students with technological projects.
We were able to see behind the scenes in the library and what different librarians do. Shephaine Bange said that there is a job for everyone in the library. You can also learn a lot from the books that you deal with.

Activities that happened that day was first she showed us around her library. She showed us how the books were numbered and how they were organized. She then showed us a room that was for tools that you might need for projects and decorations like paper cutters and also laminaters. After she showed us around we went to the Dunbar Library. We got to explore and tour the library and got to see some of the behind the scenes people. We met different people and they talked to us about what they do. We got to see the archives area in the library and some of the medals Oliver and Weber Wright received. My favorite part was when we when to student tech resource center. We were shown how they made pod casts and also shown a few examples of how they use a green screen that they had. We also got to see some of the videos that were made with it. After that we went and got lunch. Before we left we went back and she let us choose the coolest thing back at her library to take a picture. I choose a shaggy dog puppet. She gave us these bags with a few goodies when we first got there that we got to take home with us.

What I took away was that there are many different jobs in the library and that it can also be fun. You are able to learn new information.  I also learned more about what happens in libraries and what people do. She said that we should find a job that we love and do it.
